Burnout is not laziness and not a weak character. It is exhaustion that builds up when, for a long time, more energy goes out than comes back. The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory was created by Danish researchers in 2005. It is free to use and measures three things separately: personal exhaustion, work-related burnout and burnout from the people you work for. If you are not working right now, you will answer only the first part, which is about you in general.
Three scales instead of one
Personal exhaustion
How tired you are physically and emotionally, in general, not only from work.
Work-related burnout
How much energy the work itself takes, and whether any is left for life after it.
Burnout from people
How much energy goes on the people you work for: clients, patients, pupils.
Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (Kristensen, Borritz, Villadsen, Christensen, 2005), free to use. The result is a self-report, not a diagnosis. If exhaustion lasts for months and gets in the way of sleeping, eating and enjoying things, see a doctor: similar signs appear with depression, anaemia and thyroid problems.
